"The Spirit of Britain" beginning with page 167 (previous pages were not included in the gift of the Modder Papers to Dickinson College), consists of nearly one thousand consecutively illustrated pages regarding the history and literature of Great The Eighteenth Century Britain. The manuscript combines both text and images on every page, allowing the reader to visualize the historic personalities and locales mentioned therein. Unlike "Pictorial Shakespeare" "The Spirit of Britain" consists almost exclusively of refined images and, as such, does not display the progression in design from rough to final draft as does the unfinished Shakespeare manuscript.
