Angelina Emily Grimké was born in 1805 in Charleston, South Carolina into a slaveholding family. Angelina and her sister, Sarah Moore Grimké, went against their upbringing to become Quakers and well known advocates of abolition. Angelina is remembered for the letter condemning slavery that she sent to Abolitionist leader William Lloyd Garrison, which was subsequently published in The Liberator. The sisters were threatened with arrest if they ever returned to their home state. In 1838, Angelina married Theodore Weld, a famous abolitionist. Angelina Emily Grimke died in 1879.
