Benjamin Chew Howard was born on November 5, 1791, in Maryland. He attended the College of New Jersey and served in the War of 1812. Howard was a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1829-1833 and 1835-1839. After leaving the House, Howard served as a reporter for the United States Supreme Court from 1843-1862. In an attempt to prevent the Civil War, Benjamin Chew served as a member of the peace conference held in Washington, D.C., in 1861. He died in Baltimore on March 6, 1872.
